Erb's Palsy / Brachial Plexus
Erb's Palsy or Brachial Plexus is a paralysis of the arm and shoulder caused by injury to the upper group of nerves near the shoulder (specifically, spinal roots C5-C7), almost always occurring during birth. This bundle of nerves is called the brachial plexus.
Depending on the nature of the damage, the paralysis can resolve on its own over a period of months, necessitate physical therapy or require surgery but can also result in devastating lifelong inability to use the affected arm. Erb’s Palsy / Brachial Plexus is often caused by the failure of the medical provider delivering the baby to be prepared to deal with a baby they know might be too large to deliver vaginally (macrosomic or with a birth weight in excess of 10 pounds), a delayed C-section, the excessive use of a vacuum extraction and improper forceps delivery.
