Traumatic Brain Injury

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is damage to the brain caused by an external physical force that leaves a person with significant problems in physical functioning, social skills and/or the ability to think. There may be symptoms of TBI that people unfamiliar with these injuries often would not associate with an accident with no serious external head trauma such as an inability to pay attention and or bladder and bowel problems.

Anyone is at risk of a brain injury including victims of child care / day care abuse and nursing home or rest home abuse of the elderly. A closed head injury is caused when the head violently hits an object or when an accident causes the head to rapidly move and then stop or reverse direction causing the brain to impact the skull without even hitting an external object. A closed head injury or post-concussion syndrome is a complex disorder in which symptoms, such as headaches and dizziness may last for weeks and sometimes months after the impact that caused the concussion. Concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury usually occurring from the brain impacting the skull after hitting an outside object or from rapid acceleration and then deceleration. Loss of consciousness is not required for a diagnosis of concussion. In some cases, only a brief lapse of memory or a feeling of being dazed is experienced. Between 30 percent and 80 percent of the people who have a mild to moderate brain injury will also experience at least some of the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome.

Behavioral symptoms of a TBI include:

  • Restlessness
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Anxiety
  • Lack of desire
  • Difficulty controlling emotions
  • Decreased ability to cope with stress
  • Depression
  • Frustration
  • Aggression and irritability
  • Loss of memory
